Spring Dutch International Society News

Greetings from the Dutch International Society!

Thanks to all of you for renewing your membership this past April. It's only $10 for a year including four issues of the DIS Magazine, but your support helps keep the work of the DIS going. The comments we received along with many of your renewals were very gratifying, and some even included additional donations or orders for gift subscriptions.

The June 2011 issue of our quarterly magazine, DIS Magazine, is currently being put together and should arrive in mailboxes in early June. If you have any late breaking news about the Dutch / American community in your area, or any events that may be of interest to our members please let me know at vande118@msu.edu.

Human Modification of River Systems in the Netherlands
Prof. Henk Aay, Meijer Chair in Dutch Language and Culture
Tuesday, November 16, 3:30 p.m.
North Hall 078, Calvin College

For more than a thousand years, residents of the region between the Rhine and Maas Rivers have altered the natural environments of these rivers in order to escape flooding, settle safely, grow crops, and transport goods. Steadily increasing human technological interventions have directly and indirectly altered the region’s river channels and flows, landforms, soils and plant cover. Today, these are among the most harnessed rivers and river environments on earth.  The predicted consequences of global warming may result in a return to somewhat more natural conditions.

Dutch International Society News

Greetings:

Thank you for subscribing to the Dutch International Society Newsletter. We plan on using this newsletter to distribute news too timely to be included in our quarterly magazine.

Our first item - sadly - is a cancellation of the concert by Sietz de Vries planned for tomorrow at Calvin College. We received this email from Henk Aay of Calvin College.

Hello everyone, I just spoke to Sietze on the phone; he is back at home in the Netherlands after being barred from entering the USA in Detroit. He feels terrible that this has happened; with the same documentation, he has made 6 earlier concert tours in the USA. We tried to persuade immigration in Detroit to let him through but to no avail. It's still a mystery why exactly he was not allowed into the country.

So, everything associated with his visit, including the concert tomorrow, is now canceled and we will do our very best to notify everyone involved and those planning on coming to the concert. Please let people you are in contact with know.

Again, we are very sorry that this has happened. We did due diligence planning for the visit and concert. Best, Henk Aay

Met vriendelijk groet,

Arend
